Healing Through Fasting: My Journey with a Swollen Knee Injury

As a baby boomer, I’ve always prided myself on my active lifestyle. However, a few months ago, I faced an unexpected challenge—an injured knee. The swelling was unlike anything I’d ever experienced. My knee became so swollen with fluid that walking and flexing were uncomfortable, disrupting my everyday life.

Even basic activities, like going up and down stairs, became uncomfortable. The persistent swelling led me to fear it might become a long-term issue. After a visit to the orthopedic doctor, I learned there was no fracture, but he suggested aspirating my knee. I declined the procedure, opting instead to explore alternative healing methods.

One method I chose was fasting. Combined with other home remedies, fasting helped reduce inflammation, promote healing, and alleviate pain. This journey became one of self-discovery and resilience, and I am grateful for the healing process it facilitated.

But before I delve into why I chose fasting to tackle inflammation and swelling, let’s first understand what inflammation is—especially since my knee injury involved acute inflammation.

What is Inflammation?

Inflammation is the body’s way of protecting itself from harmful stimuli like infections or injuries. When triggered, the immune system releases chemicals that send white blood cells to the affected area, causing symptoms such as redness, swelling, fever, pain, heat, and loss of function.

Inflammation comes in two forms:

  • Acute Inflammation: A quick, short-term response to injury or infection that usually resolves once the cause is addressed.
  • Chronic Inflammation: A long-lasting, low-grade inflammation that can persist for months or even years.

Why I Chose Fasting to Heal Inflammation

Fasting wasn’t new to me; in fact, intermittent fasting had already become an integral part of my life after reading Fasting Like a Girl by Dr. Mindy Pelz. I have experienced its benefits for weight management, increased energy, and overall well-being. However, I had never considered its potential to heal something as specific as an injured, inflamed knee.

My inspiration to use fasting as a healing tool came from reading about its powerful effects on inflammation. While inflammation is the body’s natural response to injury, chronic inflammation, or prolonged swelling, can cause more harm than good. I realized that the swelling in my knee wasn’t just a symptom of the injury; it was my body’s way of trying to protect itself. The problem was that the inflammation wasn’t subsiding; it lingered, causing more discomfort. That’s when I began to wonder if fasting could calm my body’s inflammatory response.

Fasting: The First Steps in My Healing Process

I started slowly, incorporating 16-hour fasting windows into my routine. I would fast from 7 PM to 11 AM, giving my body ample time to rest and focus on healing instead of digesting food. This 16:8 fasting method had worked wonders for my overall health in the past, so I was hopeful it could support the healing of my knee injury.

What surprised me most was the immediate difference I felt. Within a few days, I noticed that the swelling in my knee had begun to decrease. While the pain wasn’t completely gone, the level of discomfort had significantly diminished. I felt lighter, less inflamed, and more hopeful about my recovery.

Why Fasting Helps with Inflammation

But why was fasting having such a powerful effect on my knee? It turns out that fasting reduces inflammation by putting the body into a state of repair. When we fast, our bodies stop focusing on processing food and begin using that energy to repair damaged cells. This process, known as autophagy, helps break down and eliminate damaged or inflamed cells, allowing new, healthy cells to take their place.

Fasting also triggers a reduction in inflammatory markers, such as C-reactive protein and interleukin-6, which are known to cause chronic inflammation. By lowering these markers, the body can begin to heal more effectively without the constant presence of inflammation.

Extending My Fasting Window

After seeing some initial improvements, I decided to push my fasting routine further. I wanted to give my body more time to heal, so I began experimenting with longer fasts—24 hours and sometimes even 36 hours. During these prolonged fasting periods, I allowed my body the space it needed to heal and reduce inflammation, focusing on hydration and listening to my body.

These longer fasts were a challenge at first. The hunger pangs were present, but they eventually subsided as I adjusted to the new routine. I kept reminding myself that every hour I spent fasting was an hour I was giving my body to heal.

After a few weeks of these longer fasts, the results were undeniable. My knee, once swollen and inflamed, was healing faster than I could have imagined. The swelling had reduced dramatically, and the pain that once kept me up at night was nearly gone.

Listening to My Body

As I continued my fasting journey, I learned the importance of tuning in to my body’s signals. Some days, I felt strong and ready to take on a longer fast; on other days, I needed to cut it short and break my fast earlier. Fasting is a personal journey, and it’s crucial to adjust according to your body’s needs.

During my fasting windows, I made sure to stay hydrated and replenish my body with essential nutrients when I did eat. I focused on clean, anti-inflammatory foods such as leafy greens, healthy fats like avocado, and lean proteins. I stayed away from sugar, processed foods, and anything that might trigger inflammation.

The Power of Patience

One of the hardest lessons I learned through this process was patience. Healing doesn’t happen overnight, and neither does fasting. It took few weeks of dedication, commitment, and listening to my body before I saw the full benefits. But looking back, I realize that every moment of discomfort was worth it.

As women, we often look for quick fixes to our health problems. Whether through medication, surgery, or diets, we’re constantly bombarded with promises of fast results. But fasting taught me the value of slowing down and giving my body the time it needed to heal naturally.

Integrating Movement into My Healing Process

While fasting was a significant part of my healing, I also knew I had to move my body gently to regain full mobility. I started with simple stretching exercises and eventually incorporated light walking back into my routine. Every small step helped, and I continued to support my body’s healing process by moving mindfully, without pushing myself too hard.

The Results: A Healed Knee and Renewed Health

Today, I’m happy to say that my knee is fully healed, and I’ve regained my mobility. The inflammation that once felt unbearable is now a distant memory, and I’ve returned to my active lifestyle. Fasting played a crucial role in this journey, helping me reduce inflammation and heal my body naturally.

What I’ve learned through this experience is that our bodies are incredibly resilient when we give them the tools they need to heal. Fasting has become more than just a weight-loss tool for me—it’s a powerful method for reducing inflammation, repairing damage, and renewing vitality.

Final Thoughts: Embracing Fasting for Long-Term Health

For anyone dealing with injury or chronic inflammation, I highly encourage exploring fasting as part of the healing process. It’s a natural, effective way to reduce inflammation and promote overall well-being, especially as we age.

If you’re new to fasting, start slow, listen to your body, and find a routine that works for you. Whether it’s intermittent fasting or longer fasts, the benefits are worth the effort. Give yourself the gift of healing through fasting, and you might be surprised by the results, just like I was.
